Effective Handling and Restraint

When handling or restraining animals it is important that it is done so correctly. It should be done in a way to minimise stress and prevent any injury or trauma to the animal. Quite often handling restraint procedures can present risks to the animal and the keeper or handler. Therefore it is important that the correct methods and protocols are followed by keepers. This includes having the correct equipment, wearing the correct PPE, having knowledge on the animal anatomy, behaviour and method of restraint and having good communication between colleagues.

1. Handling a Giraffe in a Chute System for a Weight Check

The two images below show me handling one of our young male giraffes in the chute system for a weight check and foot. The chute is a device used to restrain or hold a giraffe in one area for examination. The picture show the bars in place at the front of the giraffe, to keep the giraffe in the right place and keep the keepers safe. I have target trained al the giraffe to enter the chute and station on the weigh bridge. Giraffe's are very food motivated and in the picture I am demonstrating handling the giraffe calming, and delivering a reward to the giraffe through positive reinforcement.
